In Southeast Asia, originating high up in the Tibetan Plateau, the Mekong River flows southwest through China, Burma (Myanmar), Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam. Derived from "Mae Nam Khong," the Mekong River means "Khong, The Mother of Water."
The earliest known settlements along the Mekong date back to 2100 BC. For thousands of years small boats have linked trade and communities along the Mekong's banks, a practice that is still continued today. However, the river is now an important link in international trade routes between western China and Southeast Asia, connecting the six Mekong countries to each other and the rest of the world.
A Mekong River Cruise is an expedition into pristine eco-environments; the Mekong Basin is one of the richest areas of biodiversity in the world, only the Amazon boasts a higher level. The river is home to 20,000 plant species, 1,200 birds, 800 reptiles and amphibians, 430 mammals and 850 fish species.
This great river has seen the rise and fall of empires, cultural wars and battles, fisherman and explorers, traders and farmers. Discover the diversity of one of the most exciting rivers in Southeast Asia and its contemporary cities, picturesque villages and temples, mountains and woodlands along its shores.
Inaccessible in the past, a Mekong River cruise can now connect passengers to the rich history and natural beauty of cities like Angkor Wat, Phnom Penh, Ho Chi Minh City, and Hanoi.
