The Rhine is the twelfth longest river in Europe, and one of the most important. It flows north from the Swiss Alps through six countries (Switzerland, Principality of Liechtenstein, Austria, Germany, France and the Netherlands) before flowing into the North Sea at Rotterdam. The River Rhine is called different names depending on the country it flows through. It is called Rhein in Germany, Rhine in France and Rijn in Netherlands.
Since the time of the Roman Empire, the Rhine has been the lifeblood of the region as a source of water and vital waterway for trade and goods. This history is highlighted by the many romantic castles, fortresses and Old World villages that dot the hillside along with the dramatic natural landscape including rocky gorges, waterfalls and steep-sided valleys covered with vineyards.
With such a storied past, you will cruise through history on a Rhine River cruise and see wonders like the Rhine Gorge or the "the Romantic Rhine," a stretch of the river that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with more than 40 castles and fortresses dating back to the Middle Ages and important riverside cities that have successfully combined the old world, including Strasbourg, France; Cologne, Germany; and Basel, Switzerland.
